Single Pass Styles
Leather NATO / Zulu: Single-piece leather straps that slide entirely underneath the watch case through the spring bars. They offer a rugged, military look but add noticeable height to the wrist.
Leather straps range from formal dress styles to highly rugged, historically-inspired designs. They vary based on their stitching, perforations, hardware, and backing construction.
Here are the primary types and styles of leather watch straps:
Traditional & Elegant Styles
Classic Dress: Sleek, tapered, and often lightly padded with tonal stitching. Crafted from smooth calfskin or exotic skins like alligator, crocodile, and lizard to slide effortlessly under a shirt cuff.
Minimalist (Vintage Stitch): Features a clean, unpadded profile with just a few horizontal stitches near the lugs and buckle. This style highlights the natural texture and patina of the leather.
Suede & Nubuck: Made from the napped underside of the hide, offering a soft, velvety texture that softens the look of a watch for smart-casual wear.
Racing & Sport Styles
Rally: Instantly recognizable by the large, punched circular perforations down the center. This design mimics the weight-saving cutouts found on vintage racing steering wheels and driving gloves, providing excellent ventilation.
Perforated: Features a number of smaller, closely spaced holes across the surface. It offers a subtle, modern racing aesthetic that is less aggressive than a traditional rally strap.
Utility & Aviator Styles
Pilot (Flieger): Heavy-duty straps featuring one or two structural metal rivets placed just below the lugs. Historically, these reinforced the strap so German aviators wouldn’t lose their watches during flight.
Bund: Built with an extra wide, protective leather backing pad that sits completely beneath the watch case. It was originally designed for military pilots to protect their skin from extreme cockpit temperatures and sweat.
